WooCommerce Geolocation Settings

Geo Controller integrates with WooCommerce’s customer geolocation system, allowing your store to use geographic information detected from a visitor’s IP address when determining their initial location.

This integration is useful for WooCommerce stores operating across multiple countries, particularly when customer location influences tax calculations or other location-dependent store behavior.

Enable Geo Controller Geolocation in WooCommerce

  1. Install and activate WooCommerce and Geo Controller.
  2. Open the Geo Controller Settings.
  3. Enable the WooCommerce integration option.
  4. Navigate to WooCommerce → Settings → General.
  5. Find the Default customer location setting.
  6. Select Geolocate (by Geo Controller).
  7. Save your changes.

How It Works

When WooCommerce requests geolocation information, Geo Controller can provide geographic data associated with the visitor’s IP address.

Depending on the data available, this information can include:

  • Country code.
  • Region or state.
  • City.
  • Postal code.

WooCommerce can use this information when establishing the initial geographic context for a customer.

Geo Controller also integrates with WooCommerce’s customer default-location and tax-location filters.

Customer Location and Tax Calculation

WooCommerce uses customer location information as part of its existing tax calculation system.

When Geo Controller geolocation is selected, its geographic data can contribute to the tax location WooCommerce uses, particularly when no established customer information is available.

Geo Controller does not independently calculate taxes, create tax rates, or determine legal tax obligations.

Actual tax calculations remain controlled by WooCommerce settings, configured tax rates, tax classes, and available customer information.

Guest Customers and Returning Customers

A new visitor may not have provided a billing or shipping address. In this situation, IP geolocation can help establish an initial location.

Returning customers may already have location information stored in their WooCommerce account or session.

For this reason, the initial geolocated country and the country ultimately used at checkout may not always be identical.

Country, Region, and Postal Code Accuracy

IP-based geolocation provides an estimated location.

Country detection is generally more suitable for broad geographic personalization than precise street-level identification.

Regional information, city names, and postal codes may be incomplete or differ from WooCommerce’s expected location formats.

Always verify location-dependent tax and shipping behavior for the countries supported by your store.

VPNs, Proxies, and Content Delivery Networks

VPNs, proxies, reverse proxies, and content delivery networks can influence which IP address reaches your WordPress installation.

Incorrect IP detection can result in an unexpected visitor country.

If your site uses Cloudflare or another proxy service, configure Geo Controller’s IP detection settings according to your infrastructure.

Customer geolocation also works alongside other Geo Controller features:

Important Considerations

IP geolocation should be treated as a geographic estimate, not verified billing information, proof of residence, or legal evidence of a customer’s location.

Before using geolocation in tax-sensitive or checkout-related processes, test the complete customer journey with your WooCommerce configuration.
